How to measure a garage before checking whether a car will fit

A nominal garage size is less useful than the narrowest, lowest and shortest space the vehicle actually has to pass through.

1. Measure the clear door opening width

Measure between the closest fixed parts of the opening at mirror height. Tracks, frames and trim can reduce the usable width.

2. Measure the lowest usable entrance height

Measure from the finished floor to the lowest fixed obstruction the vehicle must pass beneath. Consider door mechanisms, beams, pipes and roof accessories.

3. Measure usable internal width

Measure wall to wall where the vehicle will sit, then account for shelving, pillars, cupboards, freezers or stored equipment.

4. Measure usable depth with the door closed

Use the space available after the garage door is fully closed. Remember that access to the boot or tailgate may require extra working room.

5. Decide what “fit” means for you

Physical fit is only the first test. Daily use may require room for the driver's door, passenger access and moving around the car.

Common mistakes

• Using body width when mirrors are the limiting point.
• Using external garage dimensions instead of clear internal dimensions.
• Ignoring roof boxes, aerials or garage-door hardware.
• Assuming every positive clearance will be comfortable.
• Using dimensions from a different model year or trim.
